AtkinsRéalis Ireland – a member of the AtkinsRéalis Group has delivered a significant number of active travel and greenway projects for Local Authorities across Ireland during 2022 and won a significant volume of new projects that will be delivered for clients over the coming years.

AtkinsRéalis is currently working on 110km of urban active travel walking and cycling schemes, and 180km of greenways. These projects are being carried out in close collaboration with colleagues in Local Authorities, the National Transport Authority and Transport Infrastructure Ireland. The projects are of significant scale, are both challenging and rewarding, and are contributing in a significant way to the achievement of Ireland’s Climate Action Plan targets.

Active travel projects support strategic pedestrian and cyclist routes, access to schools, permeability links, urban greenways and some minor public transport improvement projects.

AtkinsRéalis’ active travel projects include entire walking and cycling networks for urban areas of varying scale, such as Galway East City, Kilkenny, Dunboyne and Ratoath. Greenway projects include the Boyne Valley, Fingal Way, Dungarvan to Mallow, Wicklow to Greystones and University of Limerick to Montpelier greenways.

Users of active travel can benefit from improved physical and mental health, more reliable and often quicker journey times, and the associated cost savings. Active travel leaves space on public transport for those who need it most, and helps reduce traffic congestion, pollution, and carbon emissions.

Kieran Boyle, Technical Director at Atkin’s said: “AtkinsRéalis is proud to contribute to projects that promote active travel and help reduce carbon emissions in such a significant way. These are exciting times for our multidisciplinary teams and our clients. We have been and continue to look for candidates with skills in transport planning, environmental planning, scheme design, visualisation and public and stakeholder consultation due to our expanding workload.”
