The new landmark Salmon Weir Bridge in Galway City was officially opened last week. The world-class shared-use pedestrian and cycle bridge brings a number of significant benefits to Galway City and enhance links between the city centre and the University Hospital Galway, University of Galway, the Cathedral and Nuns Island.

AtkinsRéalisRéalis was appointed by Galway City Council as Designer, Checker and Employer’s Representative for the project. The project involved the design of a three span bridge which spans over the River Corrib and two adjacent channels and associated landscaping and ancillary works.

Chris Pires, Associate Director at AtkinsRéalis said “The state of the art bridge will provide a new lease of life to the area and will considerably improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and vulnerable road users in the area. AtkinsRéalis is proud to be involved in such an important and technically challenging project.”

Galway City Council previously stated that the design aims to “draw pedestrians and cyclists and facilitate a seamless and natural flow from either side of the river, while creating an iconic focal point for locals and tourists alike”.
