Project: Ballincollig Green Route and Water Services Contract
Client: Cork City Council
AtkinsRéalis Role:
AtkinsRéalis was awarded the Ballincollig Green Route by Cork City Council following the completion of the Part 8 Planning Process. Separately, as part of the Ballincollig Sewer Scheme Upgrade, the services for the town centre were advanced by Cork County Council. AtkinsRéalis completed the preliminary and detailed design for the Green Route. These schemes were combined into one contract and AtkinsRéalis was appointed the Employer’s Representative for the Contract Administration for both.
These services included:
– Developing the Part 8 Planning
– Preliminary Design
– Detail Design
– Preparation of Tender Documentation
– Project Supervisor Design Process (PSDP)
– Contract Administration of Project (including part of the Water Services Contract)
The Cork Area Strategic Plan (CASP) 2001-2020 identifies the Green Routes as high volume, high capacity public transport corridors linking the suburbs with the city centre. The Ballincollig Green Route provides bus priority measures, improved facilities for cyclists and pedestrians and accident remedial measures. Enhanced priority for pedestrians and cyclists is provided along the project route, between Classes and Inchigaggin Lane through Ballincollig Town Centre on both the R608 Model Farm Road and N22 Carrigrohane Road, approximately 10km long.
The broad scope of this project included various specific features which can be summarised as follows:
– Retrofitting bus and cycle lanes on to the existing carriageway cross section
– Upgrading existing junctions
– Replacing the existing streetscape on the Main Street in Ballincollig
– Pavement overlay
– Improving pedestrian facilities
– Signalising junctions, to be coordinated via a Split Cycle Offset Optimisation Technique (SCOOP) system at a later date
– Traffic signs and road markings
– Earthworks and accommodation works
– Upgrading of road / street lighting throughout the scheme
– Drainage
– Relocation of existing services
– Landscape mitigation works
Having completed the detailed design and the preparation of tender documents, the construction period commenced. Our services were further extended by offering on-site supervision of the construction stage.
