Harraby Community Campus

Harraby Community Campus is a truly multifunctional building, incorporating: a three form primary school; two early years’ nurseries; a Community Centre; a refurbished arts theatre; a café; and Children’s Centre.

The challenge was to bring four distinct groups (Community, School, Nursery and Children’s Centre) together in a new environment, creating a coherent sense of shared community whilst still respecting the individual identity of each group.

In response to this, the campus is imagined as an abstract representation of the surrounding residential district with its undulating suburban roofscape, where the expression of the nursery, school and community elements are articulated as a series of linked, but distinct, pavilions. Proudly, each pavilion is crowned by a translucent lantern – a beacon – that internally helps define spaces for gathering under the light, creating focal points for activity.

End-users and Local Authority are delighted with the outcome of this progressive learning environment with seamless connections from child care through to primary and adult social learning and to the wider community.

AtkinsRéalis team in Ireland provided Fire safety engineering as part of a multidisciplinary design team.

Harraby Community Campus is a hybrid single storey building, incorporating a three form primary school, two early years nurseries, a Community Centre, a refurbished arts theatre, café Childrens Centre and a soft play area hosted by Barnados. Working as Designers to Laing O’Rourke the commission was secured through our success on a limited design competition organised by the ultimate client Cumbria County Council for their supply chain contractors on the North East Construction Hub. Our appointment was directly to Laing O’Rourke, on an NEC3 PSC D&B Contract, but included close engagement with all key primary, secondary and tertiary stakeholders alongside statuatory and regulatory bodies in an intensive consultation process.

As part of the fire strategy, AtkinsRéalis liaised with the local authority, fire authority and end users to assess and agree their requirements. From a Fire Safety perspective the project required the blending of differing and conflicting fire safety codes of practice due to the differing age and user profile within the building.

This project was carried out in a live campus type environment in an occupied building.
