South West Area Acute Hospital, Enniskillen, Northern Ireland

Provision of a new 312 bed acute hospital on a greenfield site outside Enniskillen. The new hospital delivers a wide range of services including: Allied Health Professions; Ambulatory Services; Care of Older Person Wards; Children’s Centre; Children’s Wards and Outpatient Service; Clinical Investigations; Critical Care Units (ICU / HDU / CCU); Day Surgeries and theatres; Education Suite; Emergency Department (A&E); Inpatient Care; GP Out of Hours; Laboratories; Maternity Unit; Medical and Surgical Assessment Unit; Mental Health Liaison; Neonatal; Out Patients; Pharmacy; Social Services; Stroke Unit; Support Services; Surgical Wards and Theatres; Women’s Health Unit; X-Ray (Medical Imaging); staff and key worker accommodation, an energy centre and a crèche. All clinical departments face onto a central, triple height ‘street’ which links the main public spaces of the building, with careful consideration of their clinical adjacencies to minimise travel distances. Ward bedrooms have been arranged to provide long range views across the surrounding landscape. The ward accommodation has ensuite facilities, integrated therapy spaces, dining and social spaces, and ward clinical and ancillary facilities. The site has internal and external courtyards/outdoor spaces designed for both therapeutic and recreational functions. The site is extensively landscaped. The site has a standalone energy centre servicing the entire site.

AtkinsRéalis provided the structural steelwork design for all structural steel elements including 12 No. roof level buildings, 6 No. Link bridges, internal stairs and design review and checking of the lightweight cladding system to be used to all facades of the 8 No. 5 storey main hospital ward blocks.

The main structural steelwork design included detailed connection design for each steelwork element, with connections to both steelwork and reinforced concrete. The lightweight steel façade panel system incorporated internal finishes, insulation, external render and metal stud partitions, which formed a composite panel, with design checks required to verify that the system met the exacting specifications and limits set out by the client. Site visits and inspection reports were required to be carried out. as part of this large scale Design and Build project.
