Provision of a new deck over railway cutting between Marine Road and entrance to Pavilion Car Park.
AtkinsRéalis was appointed by the Architecture Department of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County council to assist with the design of the Metals Walkway Phase 1.
Historically, Dun Laoghaire Town Centre has been severed from its seafront by the railway cutting of the Dart Line particularly between Park Road and the junction of Marine Road and Crofton Road. This has created a barrier for pedestrians walking between the seafront and the town.
This scheme proposes to address this divide by creating a new deck over the railway cutting between Marine Road and the entrance to the Pavilion Car Park. This deck is designed as a new brightly lit public space complete with trees, seating and a play space along the frontage of the Pavilion. The scheme also proposes the upgrade of Marine Road to create an inviting link from the seafront to the town centre complete with a boulevard of new lights and trees.
The Metals Walkway Phase 1 won the award for Best Public Space / Urban Design at the RIAI 2012 Irish Architecture Awards on 21 June 2012 at the Wood Quay Venue, Dublin City Council.
AtkinsRéalis carried out an initial Tree Survey for the site to record species present and to retain where possible those trees in good condition. The soft landscape proposals for the Metals scheme aimed to provide the following:
– A vibrant and textured planted entrance to the scheme;
– Fragrance and colour around the outdoor eating areas;
– Informal grass strip for sitting out, picnicking and supervision of children in the adjacent play area;
– Barrier flowering hedge planting along Crofton Road; and
– Shelter from sea winds and visual separation of traffic on Crofton Road by tree planting.
AtkinsRéalis is continuing to monitor and manage the ongoing maintenance and establishment of the soft works for 2 years prior to handover to the Client’s Parks Department.
