
AtkinsRéalis was appointed by the Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to provide support services under their EIRSPAN Bridge Management Framework Contract. Since being appointed AtkinsRéalis have been responsible for carrying out Underwater Inspection and Scour Assessment of 60 River Bridges located throughout the country.
The scour inspections and assessments were undertaken in accordance with guidance published by the Highways Agency and followed a three stage process including underwater inspections, prioritisation assessment and outline design. A total of 23 No. bridges in the Ulster/Connaught region, 14 No. in Leinster and 23 No. in Munster were inspected.
The structures inspected include:
– O’Connell Bridge over the River Liffey in Dublin
– Slane Bridge over the River Boyne in Co. Meath
– Enniscorthy Bridge over the River Slaney in Co. Wexford
– St. Patrick’s Bridge over the River Lee in Cork
– Youghal Bridge over the river Blackwater in Co. Cork
– Ballinasloe Bridge No. 3 over the River Suck in Co. Galway
– Lanesborough Bridge over the River Shannon in Co. Roscommon
Stages involved:
– Stage 1 : Underwater Inspections
– Stage 2 : Analysis and Priority Ratings
– Stage 3 : Remedial Measures
The forms of structure inspected are varied including brick, masonry and reinforced concrete arches, prestressed and post tensioned concrete decks and steel composite decks. A number of precast concrete box and corrugated steel pipe culverts have also been inspected.
