AtkinsRéalis was commissioned by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council to carry out the Preliminary Design of the realignment of Pottery Road over a distance of approximately 1.6km.

The existing road ran through mainly residential areas.

The study involved preliminary design of the realignment of the road, including an assessment of the principal environment impacts of the proposed scheme. Draft CPO documents for the scheme were also prepared.

The services provided included a traffic evaluation to define road requirements, preliminary site investigation, a planning review and the definition of such design parameters as:

– Road cross-section
– Horizontal and vertical alignments
– Junction layouts
– Pavement construction
– Drainage requirements
– Assessment of existing services
– Public lighting
– Boundary treatment
– Scope for landscaping

The assessment of principal environmental impacts covered the following:

– Noise study to determine existing background and predicted future noise levels
– Air quality survey to establish baseline air quality and predicted impacts
– Flora and fauna survey
– Archaeological desktop survey
– Identification of physical impacts of proposed scheme

The proposed alignment was designed to match the existing route corridor. This was done to minimise landtake and the destruction of habitats along the routes.

The environmental studies concluded that the proposed scheme would only have a minimal impact on noise levels, air quality and archaeological sites in the area. Sections of hedgerows and areas of woodlands would need to be removed however appropriate landscaping would be provided to mitigated this impact.

The road cross section comprised a 14m carriageway and a 1.8m wide footway on both sides of the carriageway.
